May 04, 2009· After grinding, get a wheeled jig and create a microbevel on your your chisels, or blades, using either a med or fine stone or a piece of 220 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Set the jig to hold the blade in a position that causes both the front and back edge of the hollow grind to make contact and give it enough strokes to creat the mico bevel.
Convex grind — Rather than tapering with straight lines to the edge, the taper is curved, though in the opposite manner to a hollow grind. Such a shape keeps a lot of metal behind the edge making for a stronger edge while still allowing a good degree of sharpness. This grind can be used on axes and is sometimes called an axe grind. As the ...
Jan 24, 2014· Well, those that know more than I will be along in a bit, but here's my take: you have more metal behind the edge with a convex grind, which makes it stronger than a hollow grind. I don't know if it makes much difference in how sharp you can get the edge, but that edge strength does help when it comes to hard use.

Hollow ground knives are typical for extremely sharp combat blades made for slicing as well as high quality kitchen knives.

Jun 13, 2016· A flat grind is what you typically see in knives, and is my personal favorite way to make them since it allows for easy sharpening. It’s simply making a flat secondary edge (bevel), giving it a very simple look. A hollow grind is just a concave grind put into the knife that allows for ease of sharpening and reduced drag.

For example, using a 10" wheel on .25" stock, and having a .030" scribe line ( the unground section where the edge will be), you will find that the hollow grind will go about 1" up the bevel. Chang the wheel to 14" and the grind …
Grinding pressure is exerted by pushing the blade up along the tool rest into the belt. Remember you are squeezing the blade and tool rest, not pushing the tool against the tool rest. The light upward pressure, from your thumbs, moves the tool into the belt. If metal is not being removed quickly with light pressure, there is a problem with the ...
